What does a dental implant look like?

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth from the root up. It has three parts:

  • Implant post: a small titanium screw placed in the jawbone. It acts as the new tooth root.
  • Abutment: a connector that sits on the post, just above the gum.
  • Crown: the visible, tooth-coloured tooth attached to the abutment.

Once healed, the implant is fixed in place. You brush and floss it like a natural tooth, and it looks like one too.

Crown vs implant: what is the difference?

The easiest way to remember it: a crown covers a tooth you still have; an implant replaces a tooth you have lost.

Dental bridges

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a replacement tooth to crowns on the teeth on either side. It is fixed in place, not removable.

A bridge is often a good choice when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns. If those teeth are healthy, an implant may be better because it leaves them untouched. Dr de Bruyn will talk you through both options.

Frequently asked questions

Do dental implants hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, and conscious sedation is available if you are anxious. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years.

Is a crown or an implant better?

It depends on whether your tooth can be saved. If it can, a crown is usually the simpler option. If the tooth is missing or cannot be saved, an implant is the most natural replacement. Dr de Bruyn will advise you after an examination.

Does medical aid cover implants and crowns?

Cover depends on your scheme and plan. We accept all major medical aids and will help you understand your benefits before treatment.

Can implants hold dentures in place?

Yes. Implant-supported dentures clip onto implants so they do not slip while you eat and talk.
